"Spanish Silver Treasure Coin

A Genuine Pirate's Booty

In 1828 the Pirate Benito de Soto had the misfortune of being caught. His ship, The Black Joke sank amidst the treacherous rocks near Cadiz Spain while trying to outrun the Spanish authorities. His cargo was laden with captured treasures including Spanish Pieces of Eight and Four Reales Coins.

These coins were from the late 18th and early 19th century and bear the dates and the portraits of King Charles IV and Ferdinand VII of Spain from both the old and new worlds. The coins included mint marks from Cadiz, Lima, Mexico City, Potosi, Seville and Valencia.

The Ship was scavenged from 1828 to 1830. It was only rediscovered in 1991 where a mere 766 pieces, so far, of its original treasure were recovered but not released until 1955."
